On Being Part of an Underrepresented Group at Pomona

FLi at 1vy-G, the inter-Ivy, First-Gen Conference
By Daniel Garcia ’21 On campus, I work for Dean Townes, the Associate Dean for Student Mentoring and Leadership, who oversees all of Pomona’s mentoring programs. We have 10 mentoring programs at Pomona that provide a current student mentor to first-year students from similar backgrounds. While the mentor programs are almost entirely student-run and organized, the team under ...

Journal 8- Back Here Again

As Spring Semester begins, I frantically try to get classes. I decided I wanted to take the introductory psychology class and this history-of-photography thing last-minute. Maybe it's because I had a few epiphanies over winter break---at any rate, I am going to continue showing up to these classes in the hopes of getting my PERMs approved so I may enroll. If all goes well, I'll...

Journal 7- The Finals are Coming

Paradoxical stuff happens when finals come around. (1) I want to hang out with friends and have fun. (2) I decide not to, because I have to study and get work done. (3) I stay in my room trying to work, but I can't resist the urge to procrastinate. (4) I procrastinate for hours and regret not just going out with friends and having fun. (more…)

Journal 6- The Coop Fountain Gives Free Food (As Compensation)

The ASPC Kinsmith Coop Fountain is a place I frequent when in need of food at odd hours. Located right in the center of the Smith Campus Center, it's not easy to miss it. Called "The Coop" for short, one can find students hanging out here leisurely late at night, cramming right before a lab, or getting some food in between classes. I usually order chicken tenders with barbec...

Journal 5- Thanksgiving Break, Movies, Black Friday Shopping

I'd looked forward to this weekend to catch up with old high-school friends who've left to college up in NorCal. Firstly, though, there's family to attend to during Thanksgiving. As I do every year, I had lunch at my grandparents' house, which consists of turkey and some side dishes. Then for dinner there's a deep-fried turkey and shrimp and stuff like that. At about 8:50...

Journal 4- English Courses Next Semester Sound Kind of Lame (to Me, a Potential English Major)

I apologize for the title. Recently, Pomona students received an email from Margaret Adorno, which stated that the Spring 2013 course schedule is now available. Here is a piece of it, to be time-capsule-esque. Greetings Students, The spring 2013 course schedule is now available on My.Pomona.  Preenrollment takes place November 27-30. (more…)

Journal 3- Up All Night

Earlier this morning, Directioners across the world tuned in to BBC Radio 1 to hear the premier play of One Direction's latest single, "Little Things." I, being a true Directioner, stayed "Up All Night" to hear the song. I'd heard via Twitter and Tumblr that the song would air on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw. (more…)

Journal 2- Founders Day

Ah, Founders Day, Pomona College's "birthday," an event filled with fun, celebration,  lots of older people visiting, a carousel, free stuff, and not me, because I went home to stay with family, as I do every Sunday. I do admit, though, that I'd really have liked to have gone. I mean, Pomona becomes 125 years old only once, right? People keep posting pictures and quirky Fac...

Journal 1- Prospective Sagehens

Posts titled "Journal" will be sort of stream-of-consciousness things Today, I had chemistry lab, which lasts from 1:15-5:00pm. We were supposed to continue from out last week's work of "The Chemistry of Five Anions." Thankfully, I was able to get out of the lab room early at about 3:00. I realized that I hadn't gotten lunch because I slept in and had to do my pre-lab in a h...

Pomona?… Oh.

College?!?!?! Where did the time go? I'll admit that, since I was a little kid, I had a clear picture of myself attending post-secondary school. It was just natural: Academics were important to my family, and I valued it greatly. But as a child growing up in Ontario, California, the prospect of "college" simply seemed an idea that would take an eternity to take fruit. Sil...
