Across the 5Cs

Last week I wrote a not-so-happy blog post. This week is going to be much, much different. Because after I wrote out all those feelings last week, I felt better. Just getting it out on paper (err, pixels) made me feel lighter. I wrote that last Friday morning, then went and participated in an experiment run by CGU (Claremont Graduate University). I made $18 for about 50 minutes...

Premature Nostalgia

A dramatic cold front has settled upon Edinburgh (some might call it “Winter,”) and I’m both pleased and not-that-pleased.  I’m not-pleased because I’m chronically freezing, and I’m re-confronted with the thought I may be part reptile with each passing day.  However, I’m pleased, in some romantic sense, because I feel like I’m in some Northern fortress experiencing a real winte...

The Advantages of Being a Local Student: a reflection

I remember arriving at Pomona on the first day of freshman orientation. I'd left the house, with my parents and my brother, to get to campus via car and arrived within 15 minutes of departing. My roommate arrived hours late because of some plane delay stuff. After being here for about three months, I've realized that I really love living so close to Pomona. I go home abou...

Giving Thanks

Thanksgiving is tomorrow!  A time for giving thanks, right?  I suppose some things I'm thankful for are having an extremely easy week almost without classes and of course being home with the family (I survived the traffic!).  Like many families, mine has some interesting traditions around this time of year.  Some examples: (more…)

Trolling Dean Feldblum

Last night was Mudd 1 Back's sponsor group dinner at Dean Feldblum's house. Now, one of my spibs follows the Dean on Twitter, and informed us that she often tweets photos of the sponsor groups she has over. Of course, I immediately thought that it would be a brilliant idea to all wear matching clothes. And I love my sponsor group so much because they didn't think twice about it...

“Students are required to pass one physical education activity course during their first year at the College”

One of Pomona College's graduation requirements forces students to pass one physical education activity course during their first year here. This really scared me before I got to Pomona. Other than marching band, which didn't count as PE at my high school, I'd never taken sport in my life. I remember random people joining the tennis team at my high school, so I thought I'd t...

I Am in the Band

Today, as well as last Friday, Pomona College's band held a concert at Little Bridges Hall of Music, where it performed the pieces it'd been working on since the start of the semester. We performed eight pieces, ranging from tuba concerto to march, with a short intermission neatly placed in the middle. (more…)

The Magical Moving House

Most of the time, following in my mother’s footsteps is a wonderful thing.  After all, I followed her to Pomona.  However, this past week represents one of the few times when I reeeeeeally wish I hadn’t done exactly what my mom did.  Let me explain. One of my mom’s few regrets from her time at Pomona was that she did not go out at midnight to watch Seaver House move from whe...

Confessions of a Pomona College Tour Guide

I started as a Pomona College tour guide last semester.  It was one of those things I had dreamed about doing since I started taking tours in my sophomore year of high school. I always took what the tour guides said to heart, and trusted their opinions more than what the college ratings said or what admissions officers claimed.  Something about hearing from students directly al...
